Specifically, we show that for every polyhedral complex, K, and every dimension, p, there is a partition of the set of p-cells into a maximal p-tree, a maximal p-cotree, and a collection of p-cells whose cardinality is the p-th reduced Betti number of K. Given an ordering of the p-cells, this tri-partition is unique, and it can be computed by a matrix reduction algorithm that also constructs canonical bases of cycle and boundary groups."}],"publication_status":"published","date_published":"2020-03-20T00:00:00Z","year":"2020","intvolume":" 64","volume":64,"project":[{"name":"IST Austria Open Access Fund","_id":"B67AFEDC-15C9-11EA-A837-991A96BB2854"},{"grant_number":"788183","_id":"266A2E9E-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425","name":"Alpha Shape Theory Extended","call_identifier":"H2020"},{"call_identifier":"FWF","grant_number":"I02979-N35","name":"Persistence and stability of geometric complexes","_id":"2561EBF4-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425"}],"ddc":["510"],"acknowledgement":"This project has received funding from the European Research Council under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (Grant Agreement No. 78818 Alpha).
