In this paper, we report on our discovery of a tropical model with self-organized criticality (SOC) behavior. Our model is continuous, in contrast to all known models of SOC, and is a certain scaling limit of the sandpile model, the first and archetypical model of SOC. We describe how our model is related to pattern formation and proportional growth phenomena and discuss the dichotomy between continuous and discrete models in several contexts. Our aim in this context is to present an idealized tropical toy model (cf. Turing reaction-diffusion model), requiring further investigation.","lang":"eng"}],"department":[{"_id":"TaHa"}],"issue":"35","date_published":"2018-08-28T00:00:00Z","publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2023-09-18T08:41:16Z","month":"08","article_processing_charge":"No","day":"28","type":"journal_article","project":[{"grant_number":"291734","_id":"25681D80-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425","name":"International IST Postdoc Fellowship Programme","call_identifier":"FP7"}],"isi":1,"year":"2018","publist_id":"7990","volume":115,"intvolume":" 115","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"_id":"64","ec_funded":1,"article_type":"original","citation":{"ieee":"N.
