Now, the abundance of genetic markers has made it possible to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) — the regions of a chromosome or, ideally, individual sequence variants that are responsible for trait variation. What kind of QTL do we expect to find and what can our observations of QTL tell us about how organisms evolve? The key to understanding the evolutionary significance of QTL is to understand the nature of inherited variation, not in the immediate mechanistic sense of how genes influence phenotype, but, rather, to know what evolutionary forces maintain genetic variability.","lang":"eng"}],"date_created":"2018-12-11T12:07:55Z","user_id":"ea97e931-d5af-11eb-85d4-e6957dddbf17","oa_version":"None","scopus_import":"1","publisher":"Nature Publishing Group","status":"public","quality_controlled":"1","title":"Understanding quantitative genetic variation","author":[{"last_name":"Barton","first_name":"Nicholas H","id":"4880FE40-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","full_name":"Barton, Nicholas H","orcid":"0000-0002-8548-5240"},{"first_name":"Peter","last_name":"Keightley","full_name":"Keightley, Peter"}],"publication":"Nature Reviews Genetics","page":"11 - 21","doi":"10.1038/nrg700","publication_identifier":{"issn":["1471-0056"]},"external_id":{"pmid":["11823787"]},"article_type":"original","citation":{"short":"N.H.
