As Fisher, Haldane, and Wright established a century ago, Mendelian inheritance is exactly what is needed for natural selection to work efficiently. Yet, the synthesis remains unfinished. We do not understand why sexual reproduction and a fair meiosis predominate in eukaryotes, or how far these are responsible for their diversity and complexity. Moreover, although quantitative geneticists have long known that adaptive variation is highly polygenic, and that this is essential for efficient selection, this is only now becoming appreciated by molecular biologists—and we still do not have a good framework for understanding polygenic variation or diffuse function.","lang":"eng"}],"department":[{"_id":"NiBa"}],"issue":"30","date_published":"2022-07-18T00:00:00Z","publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2022-08-01T11:00:25Z","pmid":1,"tmp":{"image":"/images/cc_by.png","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","short":"CC BY (4.0)","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode"},"article_processing_charge":"No","month":"07","day":"18","type":"journal_article","file":[{"date_updated":"2022-08-01T10:58:28Z","date_created":"2022-08-01T10:58:28Z","file_size":848511,"file_id":"11716","success":1,"relation":"main_file","checksum":"06c866196a8957f0c37b8a121771c885","file_name":"2022_PNAS_Barton.pdf","access_level":"open_access","creator":"dernst","content_type":"application/pdf"}]}
