The N-independent corrections are given in terms of the solutions of the Bogoliubov and Hartree equations and satisfy a generalized form of Wick's theorem. We determine the n-point correlation functions of the excitations around the condensate, as well as the reduced densities of the N-body system, to arbitrary accuracy, given only the knowledge of the two-point functions of a quasi-free state and the solution of the Hartree equation. In this way, the complex problem of computing all n-point correlation functions for an interacting N-body system is essentially reduced to the problem of solving the Hartree equation and the PDEs for the Bogoliubov two-point functions."}],"issue":"4","year":"2021","_id":"14890"},{"article_processing_charge":"No","intvolume":" 2","volume":2,"quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"ama":"Stankowski S, Shipilina D, Westram AM. In this study, we show that this equally applies to developing “superorganisms” – incipient social insect colonies. When we exposed newly mated Lasius niger ant queens to a low pathogen dose, their colonies grew more slowly than controls before winter, but reached similar sizes afterwards. Independent of exposure, queen hibernation survival improved when the ratio of pupae to workers was small. Queens that reared fewer pupae before worker emergence exhibited lower pathogen levels, indicating that high brood rearing efforts interfere with the ability of the queen’s immune system to suppress pathogen proliferation. Early-life queen pathogen-exposure also improved the immunocompetence of her worker offspring, as demonstrated by challenging the workers to the same pathogen a year later. Transgenerational transfer of the queen’s pathogen experience to her workforce can hence durably reduce the disease susceptibility of the whole superorganism.","lang":"eng"}],"date_updated":"2023-08-14T11:45:28Z","year":"2021","day":"29","tmp":{"name":"Creative Commons Public Domain Dedication (CC0 1.0)","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/legalcode","short":"CC0 (1.0)","image":"/images/cc_0.png"},"author":[{"first_name":"Barbara E","id":"351ED2AA-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","last_name":"Casillas Perez","full_name":"Casillas Perez, Barbara E"},{"orcid":"0000-0003-1122-3982","first_name":"Christopher","id":"3C7F4840-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","last_name":"Pull","full_name":"Pull, Christopher"},{"first_name":"Filip","last_name":"Naiser","full_name":"Naiser, Filip"},{"last_name":"Naderlinger","first_name":"Elisabeth","full_name":"Naderlinger, Elisabeth"},{"last_name":"Matas","first_name":"Jiri","full_name":"Matas, Jiri"},{"orcid":"0000-0002-2193-3868","first_name":"Sylvia","last_name":"Cremer","id":"2F64EC8C-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","full_name":"Cremer, Sylvia"}],"project":[{"call_identifier":"H2020","name":"Epidemics in ant societies on a chip","_id":"2649B4DE-B435-11E9-9278-68D0E5697425","grant_number":"771402"}],"_id":"13061","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","publisher":"Dryad","status":"public","oa":1,"title":"Early queen infection shapes developmental dynamics and induces long-term disease protection in incipient ant colonies","month":"10","license":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/","ec_funded":1,"doi":"10.5061/DRYAD.7PVMCVDTJ","date_created":"2023-05-23T16:14:35Z","oa_version":"Published Version","type":"research_data_reference","department":[{"_id":"SyCr"}],"date_published":"2021-10-29T00:00:00Z","article_processing_charge":"No","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://doi.org/10.5061/dryad.7pvmcvdtj"}],"ddc":["570"],"citation":{"chicago":"Casillas Perez, Barbara E, Christopher Pull, Filip Naiser, Elisabeth Naderlinger, Jiri Matas, and Sylvia Cremer. “Early Queen Infection Shapes Developmental Dynamics and Induces Long-Term Disease Protection in Incipient Ant Colonies.” Dryad, 2021. https://doi.org/10.5061/DRYAD.7PVMCVDTJ.","mla":"Casillas Perez, Barbara E., et al. Early Queen Infection Shapes Developmental Dynamics and Induces Long-Term Disease Protection in Incipient Ant Colonies. Each island belongs to one of two distinct ecological niches or habitats. Fitness is influenced by an additive trait which is under habitat-dependent directional selection. Our analysis is based on the diffusion approximation and accounts for both genetic drift and demographic stochasticity. By neglecting linkage disequilibria, it yields the joint distribution of allele frequencies and population size on each island. We find that under hard selection, the conditions for local adaptation in a rare habitat are more restrictive for more polygenic traits: even moderate migration load per locus at very many loci is sufficient for population sizes to decline. This further reduces the efficacy of selection at individual loci due to increased drift and because smaller populations are more prone to swamping due to migration, causing a positive feedback between increasing maladaptation and declining population sizes. Our analysis also highlights the importance of demographic stochasticity, which exacerbates the decline in numbers of maladapted populations, leading to population collapse in the rare habitat at significantly lower migration than predicted by deterministic arguments.","lang":"eng"}],"tmp":{"name":"Creative Commons Public Domain Dedication (CC0 1.0)","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/legalcode","short":"CC0 (1.0)","image":"/images/cc_0.png"},"day":"02","year":"2021","citation":{"short":"E. We have discovered that, in Caenorhabditis elegans, neuronal Heat shock Factor 1 (HSF-1), the conserved master regulator of the heat shock response (HSR)- causes extensive fat remodelling in peripheral tissues. These changes include a decrease in fat desaturase and acid lipase expression in the intestine, and a global shift in the saturation levels of plasma membrane’s phospholipids. The observed remodelling of plasma membrane is in line with ectothermic adaptive responses and gives worms a cumulative advantage to warm temperatures. We have determined that at least six TAX-2/TAX-4 cGMP gated channel expressing sensory neurons and TGF-β/BMP are required for signalling across tissues to modulate fat desaturation. We also find neuronal hsf-1 is not only sufficient but also partially necessary to control the fat remodelling response and for survival at warm temperatures. This is the first study to show that a thermostat-based mechanism can cell non-autonomously coordinate membrane saturation and composition across tissues in a multicellular animal.","lang":"eng"}],"date_updated":"2023-08-14T11:53:26Z","year":"2021","tmp":{"short":"CC BY (4.0)","image":"/images/cc_by.png","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Public License (CC-BY 4.0)","legal_code_url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode"},"day":"25","author":[{"first_name":"Laetitia","last_name":"Chauve","full_name":"Chauve, Laetitia"},{"first_name":"Francesca","last_name":"Hodge","full_name":"Hodge, Francesca"},{"last_name":"Murdoch","first_name":"Sharlene","full_name":"Murdoch, Sharlene"},{"full_name":"Masoudzadeh, Fatemah","last_name":"Masoudzadeh","first_name":"Fatemah"},{"full_name":"Mann, Harry-Jack","first_name":"Harry-Jack","last_name":"Mann"},{"last_name":"Lopez-Clavijo","first_name":"Andrea","full_name":"Lopez-Clavijo, Andrea"},{"last_name":"Okkenhaug","first_name":"Hanneke","full_name":"Okkenhaug, Hanneke"},{"last_name":"West","first_name":"Greg","full_name":"West, Greg"},{"first_name":"Bebiana C.","last_name":"Sousa","full_name":"Sousa, Bebiana C."},{"full_name":"Segonds-Pichon, Anne","last_name":"Segonds-Pichon","first_name":"Anne"},{"full_name":"Li, Cheryl","first_name":"Cheryl","last_name":"Li"},{"first_name":"Steven","last_name":"Wingett","full_name":"Wingett, Steven"},{"first_name":"Hermine","last_name":"Kienberger","full_name":"Kienberger, Hermine"},{"full_name":"Kleigrewe, Karin","first_name":"Karin","last_name":"Kleigrewe"},{"full_name":"de Bono, Mario","first_name":"Mario","orcid":"0000-0001-8347-0443","last_name":"de Bono","id":"4E3FF80E-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87"},{"full_name":"Wakelam, Michael","first_name":"Michael","last_name":"Wakelam"},{"first_name":"Olivia","last_name":"Casanueva","full_name":"Casanueva, Olivia"}],"_id":"13069","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","status":"public","publisher":"Zenodo","oa":1,"title":"Neuronal HSF-1 coordinates the propagation of fat desaturation across tissues to enable adaptation to high temperatures in C. elegans","month":"12"},{"main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5794029"}],"article_processing_charge":"No","ddc":["570"],"citation":{"short":"D.L. In particular, the smallest eigenvalue of the NTK has been related to the memorization capacity, the global convergence of gradient descent algorithms and the generalization of deep nets. However, existing results either provide bounds in the two-layer setting or assume that the spectrum of the NTK matrices is bounded away from 0 for multi-layer networks. In this paper, we provide tight bounds on the smallest eigenvalue of NTK matrices for deep ReLU nets, both in the limiting case of infinite widths and for finite widths. In the finite-width setting, the network architectures we consider are fairly general: we require the existence of a wide layer with roughly order of N neurons, N being the number of data samples; and the scaling of the remaining layer widths is arbitrary (up to logarithmic factors). To obtain our results, we analyze various quantities of independent interest: we give lower bounds on the smallest singular value of hidden feature matrices, and upper bounds on the Lipschitz constant of input-output feature maps."}],"date_updated":"2024-09-10T13:03:17Z","_id":"13146","ddc":["000"],"scopus_import":"1","file_date_updated":"2023-06-19T10:49:12Z","intvolume":" 139","citation":{"ista":"Nguyen Q, Mondelli M, Montufar G. 2021. Most previous communication-efficient approaches for this problem are limited to first-order optimization, and therefore have \\emph{linear} dependence on the condition number in their communication complexity. We show that this dependence is not inherent: communication-efficient methods can in fact have sublinear dependence on the condition number. For this, we design and analyze the first communication-efficient distributed variants of preconditioned gradient descent for Generalized Linear Models, and for Newton’s method. Our results rely on a new technique for quantizing both the preconditioner and the descent direction at each step of the algorithms, while controlling their convergence rate. We also validate our findings experimentally, showing faster convergence and reduced communication relative to previous methods.","lang":"eng"}],"date_updated":"2023-06-19T10:44:38Z","_id":"13147","ddc":["000"],"file_date_updated":"2023-06-19T10:41:05Z","scopus_import":"1","citation":{"apa":"Alimisis, F., Davies, P., & Alistarh, D.-A. However, there is, now, cross-pollination and increasing interest in both fields to benefit from the advances of the other. In this article, we review fundamental concepts of causal inference and relate them to crucial open problems of machine learning, including transfer and generalization, thereby assaying how causality can contribute to modern machine learning research. This also applies in the opposite direction: we note that most work in causality starts from the premise that the causal variables are given. A central problem for AI and causality is, thus, causal representation learning, that is, the discovery of high-level causal variables from low-level observations. Finally, we delineate some implications of causality for machine learning and propose key research areas at the intersection of both communities.","lang":"eng"}],"year":"2021","month":"05","status":"public","oa":1,"publication_identifier":{"eissn":["1558-2256"],"issn":["0018-9219"]},"oa_version":"Published Version","date_published":"2021-05-01T00:00:00Z","publication_status":"published","doi":"10.1109/jproc.2021.3058954","citation":{"short":"B. In machine learning, online monitoring is often formulated as a supervised learning problem. Recently, contrastive learning approaches have demonstrated promising improvements over competitive supervised benchmarks. These methods rely on well-understood data augmentation techniques developed for image data which do not apply to online monitoring. In this work, we overcome this limitation by\r\nsupplementing time-series data augmentation techniques with a novel contrastive\r\nlearning objective which we call neighborhood contrastive learning (NCL). Our objective explicitly groups together contiguous time segments from each patient while maintaining state-specific information. Our experiments demonstrate a marked improvement over existing work applying contrastive methods to medical time-series."}],"_id":"14176","article_processing_charge":"No","external_id":{"arxiv":["2106.05142"]},"quality_controlled":"1","volume":139,"page":"11964-11974","date_created":"2023-08-22T14:03:04Z","publication":"Proceedings of 38th International Conference on Machine Learning","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"department":[{"_id":"FrLo"}],"type":"conference","title":"Neighborhood contrastive learning applied to online patient monitoring","publisher":"ML Research Press","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","alternative_title":["PMLR"],"day":"01","extern":"1","author":[{"full_name":"Yèche, Hugo","first_name":"Hugo","last_name":"Yèche"},{"full_name":"Dresdner, Gideon","last_name":"Dresdner","first_name":"Gideon"},{"full_name":"Locatello, Francesco","id":"26cfd52f-2483-11ee-8040-88983bcc06d4","last_name":"Locatello","orcid":"0000-0002-4850-0683","first_name":"Francesco"},{"full_name":"Hüser, Matthias","first_name":"Matthias","last_name":"Hüser"},{"first_name":"Gunnar","last_name":"Rätsch","full_name":"Rätsch, Gunnar"}]},{"conference":{"start_date":"2021-07-18","name":"ICML: International Conference on Machine Learning","end_date":"2021-07-24","location":"Virtual"},"publication_status":"published","date_published":"2021-08-01T00:00:00Z","oa_version":"Published Version","scopus_import":"1","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://arxiv.org/abs/2006.07886"}],"citation":{"chicago":"Träuble, Frederik, Elliot Creager, Niki Kilbertus, Francesco Locatello, Andrea Dittadi, Anirudh Goyal, Bernhard Schölkopf, and Stefan Bauer. “On Disentangled Representations Learned from Correlated Data.” In Proceedings of the 38th International Conference on Machine Learning, 139:10401–12. However, the causal variables underlying real-world observations are often not statistically independent. In this work, we bridge the gap to real-world scenarios by analyzing the behavior of the most prominent disentanglement approaches on correlated data in a large-scale empirical study (including 4260 models). We show and quantify that systematically induced correlations in the dataset are being learned and reflected in the latent representations, which has implications for downstream applications of disentanglement such as fairness. We also demonstrate how to resolve these latent correlations, either using weak supervision during\r\ntraining or by post-hoc correcting a pre-trained model with a small number of labels."}],"_id":"14177","oa":1,"status":"public","month":"08","page":"10401-10412","date_created":"2023-08-22T14:03:47Z","publication":"Proceedings of the 38th International Conference on Machine Learning","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"department":[{"_id":"FrLo"}],"type":"conference","article_processing_charge":"No","external_id":{"arxiv":["2006.07886"]},"quality_controlled":"1","volume":139,"day":"01","extern":"1","author":[{"first_name":"Frederik","last_name":"Träuble","full_name":"Träuble, Frederik"},{"full_name":"Creager, Elliot","first_name":"Elliot","last_name":"Creager"},{"full_name":"Kilbertus, Niki","first_name":"Niki","last_name":"Kilbertus"},{"full_name":"Locatello, Francesco","first_name":"Francesco","orcid":"0000-0002-4850-0683","last_name":"Locatello","id":"26cfd52f-2483-11ee-8040-88983bcc06d4"},{"full_name":"Dittadi, Andrea","last_name":"Dittadi","first_name":"Andrea"},{"full_name":"Goyal, Anirudh","first_name":"Anirudh","last_name":"Goyal"},{"full_name":"Schölkopf, Bernhard","first_name":"Bernhard","last_name":"Schölkopf"},{"first_name":"Stefan","last_name":"Bauer","full_name":"Bauer, Stefan"}],"title":"On disentangled representations learned from correlated data","publisher":"ML Research Press","user_id":"2DF688A6-F248-11E8-B48F-1D18A9856A87","alternative_title":["PMLR"]},{"external_id":{"arxiv":["2010.14407"]},"quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"apa":"Dittadi, A., Träuble, F., Locatello, F., Wüthrich, M., Agrawal, V., Winther, O., … Schölkopf, B. While disentangled representations were found to be useful for diverse tasks such as abstract reasoning and fair classification, their scalability and real-world impact remain questionable. We introduce a new high-resolution dataset with 1M simulated images and over 1,800 annotated real-world images of the same setup. In contrast to previous work, this new dataset exhibits correlations, a complex underlying structure, and allows to evaluate transfer to unseen simulated and real-world settings where the encoder i) remains in distribution or ii) is out of distribution. We propose new architectures in order to scale disentangled representation learning to realistic high-resolution settings and conduct a large-scale empirical study of disentangled representations on this dataset. We observe that disentanglement is a good predictor for out-of-distribution (OOD) task performance.","lang":"eng"}]}]
